The 2026 Holiday Gift Guide: Hard-to-Find Gifts

We check every price and date against the store or maker. Some links are affiliate links: if you buy, we may earn a commission at no cost to you.

This is our 2026 holiday gift guide for New Jersey parents and grandparents, with a special focus on the gifts that are hard to find. We sort ideas by age and by budget, tell you honestly which items are scarce and which are sitting on shelves, and list the dates that matter between now and Christmas.

Holiday gift guide cover with Switch 2, Pikachu plush, Tickle Me Elmo, a LEGO set and a NeeDoh
A mix of hot and easy-to-find gifts for every age in 2026.

How to use this guide

Start with the person you are shopping for, then check the price. Each age section below gives a few ideas that real kids are asking for this season. The budget section works the other way around: pick a number, see what it buys. If a gift is scarce, you will find it again in the hard-to-find section with a plan for where to look.

Every price in this guide is either one of our own catalog list prices or comes from a dated source listed at the bottom of the page. Retailer prices change, so treat any number you see here as a snapshot and check the store before you drive over. We also say so plainly when we could not confirm something. If you see a price or a stock claim that looks off, tell us.

A word on tone. Shortages are real for a handful of items, and we cover those. But most of a good holiday is made of things that are easy to buy, and there is no prize for fighting a crowd over a toy a child will forget by February. Wherever we can, we point out a calmer alternative.

If you want to follow a specific item, the free RestockPal app pings you when parents nearby report it on a shelf, and our hot right now list shows what other New Jersey families are chasing this week.

Gift ideas by age

Ages are a rough guide. Check the box for the manufacturer's recommended age, especially for small parts.

Little kids (toddlers to age 5)

Little kids want something to hug, press, pour or pretend with. Tickle Me Elmo is back this year, and the Tickle Me Elmo Giggle Max is on the Toy Insider's Hot 20 list and Target's top toys list. Its list price is $39.99.

Target's 2026 list also names the Fisher-Price Little People Ultimate Mountain Playset, and the Toy Insider picked a Bluey Light and Surprise Heeler House. Neither has a price in the sources we checked, so look them up before you shop. For a smaller budget, Amazon's list includes a Melissa and Doug Sticker Wow! Disney Stitch set at $12.99, and Good Morning America's roundup priced a LEGO DUPLO Classic Brick Box at $23.99.

Audio is a good quiet-time gift too. Target's list names Bluey and Pokémon Toniebox 2 starter sets.

Ages 6 to 9

This is the golden age for building and collecting. The LEGO Rebel U-wing (75399) is $69.99 in our catalog, which is big enough to feel like a real gift. If your child loves a different theme, our LEGO category shows every set we track, and our guide to LEGO sets retiring at the end of 2026 explains which ones to grab first.

The Pikachu Puppetronic interactive plush ($79.00 list in our catalog) appears on Target's, Amazon's and the Toy Insider's lists, so a lot of kids will be asking for it. For hands-on science, Amazon lists the CrunchLabs Crunchinator at $34.99. Hot Wheels fans can get a set of 20 cars for $23.94 at Walmart, per Good Morning America.

If your child follows movies, our Toy Story 5 toys gift guide covers that shelf.

Tweens (ages 10 to 12)

Tweens want things they can show friends. Squishy toys are having a big year: Good Morning America reported that some independent toy stores are struggling to keep them in stock. Our NeeDoh category has dozens of them, and our best NeeDohs for Christmas 2026 post picks the ones worth wanting. The Squishmas Advent Calendar is the holiday headliner, but be careful, since we cover its price swings below.

Pokémon cards are the other big one, because 2026 is the brand's 30th anniversary. Our Pokémon cards category tracks the boxes, and the Pokémon cards for Christmas 2026 post explains which are worth buying. Blind-box fans may like Labubu and Pop Mart; read our Labubu guide for parents first.

Drinkware is a quiet hit with this age group. The Owala and Target holiday collection started October 18, with 24 oz FreeSip bottles at $29.99 and 30 oz Sway bottles at $34.99. Our catalog tracks the 24 oz FreeSip and the 30 oz Sway.

Teens

Teens are the hardest to shop for and the easiest to give up on, so a few safe bets help. The Nintendo Switch 2 is $499.99 after Nintendo's September 1 price increase, and the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World bundle is $549.99. We go deeper in Nintendo Switch 2 for Christmas 2026.

For headphones, our catalog lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 and AirPods Max 2 at $549. For a build-it-slowly gift, consider the LEGO Nightmare Before Christmas (21351) at $199.99 or the LEGO Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory (21360) at $219.99. Stanley's 2026 holiday collection has 42 pieces, with a 40 oz Quencher at $55 and a 30 oz at $45, according to NJ.com.

Be careful with the biggest-ticket tech. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. CBS News reported that delivery estimates slipped within minutes of pre-orders opening, and by that Friday afternoon it was backordered to late January 2027. It is not a safe gift to promise for Christmas Day.

Gift ideas by budget

All prices below are list or retailer prices from the sources named in this guide, as of October 18. Stores change prices often, so check before you buy.

Under $10

Our stocking stuffers under $10 post has the full list.

Under $25

Target says its Bullseye's Top Toys list starts at $4.99, and Amazon says 15 toys on its 2026 list are under $15. So you do not need a big budget to buy something on a hot list.

The hard-to-find list and where to look

These are the items where we would not wait until the second week of December. For each, we say what is going on and where to look first. Our full list lives in hardest-to-find toys for Christmas 2026.

Pokémon 30th Celebration boxes$69.99 to $89.99 (sources differ)Drawings and invitationsWalmart Wednesday drawing, Amazon invite, Target

PS5 Pro

This one is genuinely hard to find. PlayStation Direct listed the PS5 Pro as unavailable when we checked on October 18, and The Shortcut reported on October 12 that Sony has told retailers limited supply will last into early 2027. Resale prices are ugly: GameStop was selling used PS5 Pros for $1,399.99 or more as of October 6. Please do not pay that. Our PS5 Pro post has the full picture, and the next-best plan for most families is a different console, or a gift card with a note.

Nintendo Switch 2 and the Zelda edition

The regular Switch 2 and its Mario Kart World and Switch Sports Resort bundles are not reported as short. We found no shortage reports either way, so treat that as unconfirmed good news. The Zelda 40th Anniversary edition is different: it is scarce, and Best Buy plans midnight openings at select stores on November 5 with limited quantities. Read Nintendo Switch 2 for Christmas 2026 for bundles and dates.

NeeDohs and squishies

NeeDohs were a spring and summer craze. Schylling's own site said it is taking a short pause on new orders, with no estimated date to resume. The holiday advent calendar is the item to plan around. Yahoo Shopping said Amazon sells it by invitation request at $29.99, while third-party sellers on Walmart.com were asking $220 to $255 in snapshots we saw. That is a gouge, not a price. Our guide to finding NeeDohs in New Jersey and the why NeeDoh sold out explainer help, and the spot-a-fake guide matters because the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned in August about fake and counterfeit squishy toys.

Pokémon cards

The 30th anniversary has made cards scarce in unusual ways. Walmart runs a weekly Wednesday drawing, Amazon asks you to request an invitation for the Elite Trainer Box, and the listed prices vary between sources, so we do not give a single price. The new Mega Evolution Delta Reign set goes on sale November 6, according to a release calendar citing The Pokémon Company's announcement. Our Pokémon cards post explains how to avoid overpaying.

Tumblers

The Owala and Target holiday collection dropped this weekend and is described as the first of several drops. Stanley's 42-piece holiday collection was already partly sold out when NJ.com wrote about it on October 12, including the 16 oz Everyday Tumbler. Browse our tumblers category for what we are tracking.

A plan for the scarce stuff

Decide early what you will do if you strike out. Buy one sure gift now and treat the scarce item as a bonus. For a console or a phone, a gift card or a handwritten note works well for older kids. For a toy, ask whether a close alternative would make them happy. Our post on beating resellers covers what to do when someone is asking triple.

What is easier to find this year

Not every popular gift is a fight. The honest list is shorter than we would like, because we only include things our sources support.

One more piece of context: toy prices are up. Reuters reported on October 15 that the Consumer Price Index showed toy prices up 6.6% over the past year, with the cause given as tariffs and higher energy and shipping costs. Reuters did not report a general toy shortage. In other words, you may pay more, but you will not have to hunt for most things.

Key dates: Black Friday, shipping and returns

Sales dates

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. Black Friday is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. As of October 16, Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy had not announced their own Black Friday 2026 dates, according to Koupon.ai. Our Black Friday 2026 guide for New Jersey toy hunters will be updated as retailers confirm.

Ship-by dates for gifts you mail

If you are sending gifts to grandchildren out of state, the USPS dates are the ones to remember. These are the dates from the Postal Service's holiday announcement for delivery by December 25 within the contiguous United States:

ServiceLast day to shipSource
USPS Ground AdvantageThursday, Dec 17USPS, Sept 22, 2026
USPS First-Class MailThursday, Dec 17USPS, Sept 22, 2026
USPS Priority MailFriday, Dec 18USPS, Sept 22, 2026
USPS Priority Mail ExpressSaturday, Dec 19USPS, Sept 22, 2026
FedEx Ground / Home Delivery (4-day transit)Friday, Dec 18Saltbox, citing FedEx
FedEx 2DayTuesday, Dec 22Saltbox, citing FedEx

FedEx dates are for arrival by December 24 and come from a secondary source relaying FedEx's schedule, so confirm on FedEx's site. UPS had not published official last-ship dates as of early October, per Saltbox, and we have not found them since. Aim to ship at least a week before any of these dates, because storms and volume do not read the calendar.

Return windows

The shorter Apple window at Amazon matters if an iPhone or AirPods are on your list. Keep every receipt and gift receipt together in one envelope.

New Jersey shopping tips

Bergen County closes on Sundays

Bergen County is the only New Jersey county that still enforces Sunday blue laws. The state law that applies there bars Sunday sales of clothing, furniture, building materials and household appliances, among other things. Paramus is stricter than the county, and the Westfield Garden State Plaza lists its Sunday hours as closed. Plan your big mall trips for Saturday or a weekday evening, and do not count on a Sunday rescue run for a missing gift.

The rules are being tested in court. Paramus sued American Dream in East Rutherford in August 2025, arguing its Sunday retail violates the law. American Dream says it sits on state land. At a June 9, 2026 hearing, the judge reserved decision, and we did not find a later ruling. Until you see otherwise, assume Paramus malls are closed on Sundays this holiday season, and check American Dream's hours before you go.

Sales tax

New Jersey's sales tax rate is 6.625%. Clothing and footwear for people are exempt, so a hoodie as a gift is untaxed. Toys, game consoles and electronics are not part of that exemption, so plan for the tax on those. We did not find a line on a New Jersey government page naming toys, but the general rule covers most tangible goods.

Know your chains

For toys, the big names are Target, Walmart and Five Below, and for games, Best Buy and GameStop. For NeeDohs and similar impulse buys, Five Below is a stocking stuffer stop, and our all-stores page shows every New Jersey location we track. Toys"R"Us shop-in-shops continue in Macy's stores, which are listed under Macy's.

One practical tip: if you see something on a shelf that another parent has been looking for, report it. A quick note on the report-a-find page helps a neighbor skip the trip, and it is how we all stay ahead of the resale crowd.

FAQ

What are the hardest gifts to find in 2026?

The PS5 Pro, the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2, the iPhone Duo, the NeeDoh advent calendar and Pokémon 30th Celebration boxes are the main ones we found in our sources. Each has a different reason, and we update the list weekly.

Is the PS5 Pro in stock?

PlayStation Direct listed it as currently unavailable on October 18, and reports say limited supply could last into early 2027. Stock changes by the hour, so check PlayStation Direct and your local stores.

Should I pay resale prices for a sold-out toy?

We would not. Examples we saw include NeeDoh advent calendars at $220 to $255 on third-party listings, while Amazon offered it by invitation at $29.99. Schylling has not confirmed a list price. Buy from official sellers, or choose an alternative.

When is Black Friday 2026?

Black Friday is November 27, and Cyber Monday is November 30. Individual retailer sale dates had not been announced as of mid-October.

What is the last day to ship gifts by USPS?

For delivery by December 25 in the contiguous US, USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail should ship by December 17. Priority Mail is December 18 and Priority Mail Express is December 19.

Are toys taxed in New Jersey?

New Jersey's sales tax is 6.625% on most goods, and clothing and footwear are exempt. Toys are not part of the clothing exemption, so expect to pay the tax on them.

Are Bergen County stores closed on Sundays?

Many are. Bergen County enforces Sunday blue laws, and Garden State Plaza lists Sundays as closed. A court case about American Dream was still pending when we last checked.

How often is this guide updated?

Weekly through the holiday season. The changelog box near the top shows what changed.

That is the first edition. Come back next Sunday, and meanwhile browse our full list of tracked items or track the ones you want in the free RestockPal app. We will tell you when something turns up.
